JUST’s Journey: Vice-Chancellor Highlights Growth, Goals, and Global Recognition

The Vice-Chancellor of Jashore University of Science and Technology (JUST), Professor Dr. Md. Abdul Majid, has stated that the university’s achievements on the international stage are “envy-worthy.” He emphasized that although the institution has just entered its youthful phase after passing adolescence, it has already secured a place in global rankings in education and research. He called upon well-wishers and knowledge enthusiasts of Jashore to stand by the university in sustaining its advancement.

On Tuesday, September 23, during a press briefing titled “For the Advancement of Education and Research” held at the conference room of the JUST administrative building, Dr. Abdul Majid made this appeal to journalists. In his opening remarks, he paid tribute to the martyrs of the 1952 Language Movement and to those who sacrificed their lives in the July 2024 mass uprising against inequality. He also wished a speedy recovery for those injured during the 2024 movement who are still under treatment.

Discussing the university’s progress, the Vice-Chancellor said, “Since my joining, I have been striving to fulfill the various demands of the students while ensuring the academic and infrastructural development of the university. My primary goal is to elevate JUST to international standards in education and research, and to transform our students into skilled human resources by creating an environment conducive to quality learning.” He added that initiatives such as national conferences, seminars, and workshops on higher education and mental health will continue, while projects like the July Corner and preservation of the university’s original foundation stone have been undertaken to uphold history and tradition.

Highlighting student welfare, Dr. Majid noted that JUST has recently opened two new residential halls, modernized dining facilities, addressed transportation challenges, expanded vehicle pools, launched an online results system, established an emergency service center, and introduced long-awaited registration for the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine under the Bangladesh Veterinary Council on September 8, 2025. He added that the campus has been declared free from ragging and politically influenced activities. Scholarships and research fellowships have been expanded to promote student engagement in research. The newly launched Center for Training and Skill Development (CTSD) aims to equip students with employable skills, with plans to open a branch in Jashore town.

The Vice-Chancellor further highlighted innovations such as the establishment of an Innovation and Start-up Support Cell, an Institutional Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), and an Accreditation Support Cell. JUST researchers have already distributed disease-free Gerbera saplings to commercial farmers in Godkhali, with upcoming initiatives including the opening of physiotherapy and nursing care units, as well as molecular research and diagnostic services. A Coastal and Brackishwater Center is set to be established in Satkhira to conserve biodiversity and enhance resources, while plans are underway for research into the preservation and commercialization of Jashore’s famed date sap. Future projects include research buildings, a Pilot Workshop for the Light Engineering Industry, and a Regional Energy Research Hub. New departments, including Nanotechnology, Aerospace Engineering, and Artificial Intelligence, are also planned.

Calling for journalists’ continued support, Dr. Majid said, “JUST covers only 35 acres of land. With the university expanding in scope and activities, it is becoming difficult to sustain educational and research progress within such a limited area. We are moving towards becoming a fully residential university, and therefore urgent land acquisition is essential.” He noted that proposals have already been submitted to the University Grants Commission (UGC), with revisions underway. He urged all stakeholders—including the Honorable President and Chancellor, the Chief Adviser, and the Education Adviser—to support the land acquisition process, which he described as a demand of students, teachers, staff, and the people of Jashore alike.

“Despite conspiracies and misinformation campaigns aimed at undermining the university, we remain committed to sustaining JUST’s progress. With the support of journalists and the people of Jashore, I firmly believe the university will advance much further in education and research,” the Vice-Chancellor concluded.

The meeting was attended by JUST Treasurer Professor Dr. Hossain Al Mamun, President of Jashore Press Club Jahid Hasan Tukun, and journalists from various print, electronic, and online media. Constructive questions and suggestions raised during the session were positively received and officially documented for future action.
