Metro Rail Introduces 25% Fare Discount for Senior Citizens and Persons with Disabilities
To promote a more inclusive and modern urban transport system in the capital, the government has announced a 25% discount on metro rail tickets for senior citizens aged 65 years and above, as well as for persons with disabilities and special needs.
The initiative was confirmed by Deputy Project Director of the Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited, Md. Ahsan Ullah Sharifi.
Under the new policy, senior citizens will be eligible for the discount upon verification of age through their National Identity Card (NID) when purchasing single-journey tickets. Similarly, passengers with disabilities will receive the same 25% fare reduction by presenting the government-issued “Suborno” identity card issued under the Ministry of Social Welfare.
Officials said the new system will be integrated into the metro rail’s central ticketing platform, making the process automated and digitally efficient.
The initiative is scheduled to be formally inaugurated on Monday, May 25 at 12:30 PM at Farmgate Metro Station by Road Transport and Bridges Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam. After the launch, the discount system will become active across the metro rail network.
Authorities said the move is part of broader efforts to build a smart, accessible, and socially inclusive public transport system in Bangladesh.
