Labaid Launches Advanced Digital BMT and Cell Therapy Center
Labaid Cancer Hospital and Super Speciality Center has officially launched an advanced Bone Marrow Transplantation (BMT) and Cell Therapy unit to expand digital technology integration and cancer treatment services in Bangladesh’s healthcare sector. The advanced medical wing was inaugurated on Thursday, May 21, with the goal of elevating the country’s oncology and hematology treatment standards to the global level.
Managing Director Sakif Shamim attended the inauguration ceremony as the chief guest. Also present at the event were Chairman Dr. A.M. Shamim, Director Mastura Farzana Mohona, Chief Executive Officer Dr. Suchit Kumar Das, and Chief Business Officer Masud Ahmed.
Sakif Shamim stated that Labaid remains committed to incorporating global standards and modern technologies into the country’s cancer treatment sector. He described the state-of-the-art therapy center as a major digital and technological addition to the national healthcare system.
During the event, Professor Dr. Md. Salahuddin Shah delivered a presentation highlighting the infrastructural and technological facilities of the center. He said that with the availability of world-class bone marrow transplant facilities within the country, advanced treatment for patients suffering from complex blood disorders and cancer would now become more affordable and accessible.
Doctors from the hospital’s Hematology Department were also present at the ceremony, including Professor Dr. Alamgir Kabir, Professor Dr. Mohammad Sirajul Islam, Lieutenant Colonel Dr. Masuma Ahmed Salsabil, and Dr. Mafruha Akter, along with physicians from other departments.
It was announced at the event that the new BMT center includes internationally standard HEPA-filter-equipped isolation cabins for infection control, along with automated autologous and allogeneic transplant facilities. In addition, advanced diagnostic technologies such as Flow Cytometry, Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization (FISH), and molecular testing have been incorporated for sophisticated laboratory examinations. These technologies are expected to ensure 24-hour emergency treatment support for patients suffering from leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma.
According to sources, the newly launched advanced Bone Marrow Transplantation (BMT) and Cell Therapy Center at Labaid integrates globally standardized modern technologies for patients, adding a new dimension to cancer and blood disease treatment in Bangladesh. Since cancer patients generally have weaker immune systems than healthy individuals, the center has established fully sterile and specially infection-controlled separate cabin blocks.
Furthermore, each cabin has been equipped with internationally standard HEPA-filter-based isolation systems capable of filtering microscopic dust particles and harmful pathogens from the air.
The center has also introduced two modern transplant management systems for replacing defective bone marrow responsible for blood production. The procedure involving transplantation using healthy cells collected from the patient’s own body is referred to as autologous transplantation, while the process involving healthy donor cells from another suitable individual is known as allogeneic transplantation.
The entire treatment process will be supervised by a skilled multidisciplinary medical team comprising specialists in hematology, oncology, and transplantation medicine.
To ensure precise detection of blood cancer, white blood cell disorders, and complex marrow-related cancers, the center has installed several world-class diagnostic technologies. These include Flow Cytometry and FISH for detecting abnormalities in blood and cells using laser-based analysis, alongside advanced laboratory facilities such as cytogenetics and molecular testing to identify genetic structures and DNA mutations associated with cancer.
