Fake Facebook Fraud Foiled: Two Arrested in Digital Scam Crackdown
Two members of a fraud ring accused of embezzling money by posing as online sellers using Facebook IDs have been arrested by Jamalpur District Police.
According to police, the suspects were detained on Tuesday, 12 May, following raids conducted in different parts of the country in connection with a case filed under the Cyber Security Act at Jamalpur Sadar Police Station.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Bandhan Roy of Tungipara in Gopalganj and Shariful Islam Nipu of Kotwali in Mymensingh. Legal proceedings against them were underway at the time of filing this report.
Police said the group created exact replicas of popular business Facebook pages and personal accounts to post advertisements. After collecting advance payments through bKash and Nagad, they would cease communication without delivering the promised products.
Investigations revealed that Shariful Islam Nipu worked as a supervisor at a Nagad office. Exploiting his position, he allegedly used customers’ National Identity Cards to illegally obtain SIM cards. These SIMs were then sent via courier to Bandhan Roy, who used them to open fake Facebook accounts and carry out the fraud.
During the operation, Shariful Islam Nipu was arrested from Mymensingh at around 3:00 am on Tuesday night, while Bandhan Roy was arrested from Gopalganj at around 8:00 am.
Additional Superintendent of Police Yahia Al Mamun said that cyber fraud is increasing at an alarming rate. While law enforcement agencies are identifying offenders, he urged the public to remain more cautious in conducting online transactions.
