The appointment of Md. Abdur Rashid Mia as the newly appointed Chief Engineer of the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) has been cancelled just five days after he assumed office.

On 29 March, Sunday, the Ministry of Public Administration issued a notification signed by Deputy Secretary Md. Golam Rabbani, announcing the cancellation of his appointment.

The notification states that his contract-based appointment has been annulled in the public interest.

Previously, Md. Abdur Rashid Mia retired from the position of Chief Engineer of LGED during the tenure of the caretaker government. However, following the BNP government’s assumption of office, the Ministry of Public Administration issued a notification on 24 March appointing Abdur Rashid Mia to the position of LGED Chief Engineer on a one-year contract basis.

The appointment faced criticism from various quarters immediately. Concerns were raised about why an official with allegations of corruption was appointed to the top engineering position, and even LGED officials expressed dissatisfaction.

Sources indicate that while serving as the supervising engineer of LGED, Md. Abdur Rashid Mia acquired substantial assets under his name and others beyond known sources of income. In April 2023, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) initiated an investigation into his irregularities and corruption. Consequently, his contract-based appointment was cancelled just five days after being confirmed.
