Alvi Refuses to Return from Nepal Over Mob Threats
Actor Alvi Alleges Third-Party Role in Wife Ikra’s Suicide
Actor Zaher Alvi has publicly stated on social media that he will not return to Bangladesh from Nepal, citing fears of “mob violence,” following the suicide of his wife, Afra Evenath Khan Ikra. Alvi also alleged that a third party was responsible for his wife’s death.
On 3 March, Monday evening, Alvi posted a nearly 30-minute video on his verified Facebook page, addressing questions from netizens regarding Ikra’s suicide. In the video, he explained why he did not see his wife for the last time, discussed his marital life with Ikra, and addressed her professional relationship with co-actor Tithi.
Regarding the most discussed question—why he did not return to see his wife—Alvi said, “On the day of the incident, there was no direct flight, and transit would have meant arriving the next day. Despite multiple attempts, I could not secure a ticket. Upon crossing immigration the next day, I received information about a possible attack and therefore did not enter the country.”
Alvi added, “Do you consider the situation for my return? Upon entering the country, a mob would form against me. I have received numerous threats on my phone. I was not allowed to see Ikra’s final face, nor did her family let me see her.”
Regarding his relationship with Ikra, he said, “From the beginning, their relationship was toxic. Ikra was suspicious and had requested divorce multiple times, but I did not agree.”
On the subject of celebrating Tithi’s birthday in Nepal and their relationship, Alvi explained, “Whenever someone’s birthday is celebrated on set, the entire team celebrates because we work like a family. I did not organize Tithi’s birthday; it was arranged collectively by the team.”
About his relationship with Tithi, he said, “Working together for a long period creates a sense of dependency. Tithi and I think similarly as individuals, and I felt she was the safest person for me in the industry. This person could never harm me.”
In conclusion, Alvi pleaded to return to his son, Rizik, saying, “Please let me return to my son. I want to provide him with a good future and ensure his well-being.”
On 28 February, Saturday, Ikra committed suicide at her residence in the Mirpur DOHS area while Alvi was shooting a drama in Nepal. Within hours of the incident, he shared an emotional response on his verified Facebook account.
Earlier, a human chain was organized demanding justice against Alvi and Tithi for allegedly encouraging Ikra’s suicide. Model Barisha Haque confirmed that the protest will take place on 4 March at 12:00 pm in front of the Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (FDC) gate. She announced on her Facebook page, “Human chain at FDC gate on 4 March at 12:00 pm. Open to all. We Want Justice For IKRA.”
Alvi had also previously posted, “We want justice for Ikra Apu, want to organize a human chain. Media personnel with courage, please come forward and do not support injustice.”
Following Ikra’s death, a case has been filed against Zaher Alvi and his mother Nasrin Sultana Shiuli. On Sunday, Ikra’s father Kabir Hayat Khan filed the case at Pallabi Police Station, Dhaka, confirmed by her maternal uncle Sheikh Tanvir Ahmed. The case cites allegations of abuse, mental harassment, and extramarital relationships.
