Renowned nuclear scientist Dr. M Moinul Islam has been appointed Acting Chairman of the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC). The appointment was made through an official order issued by the Ministry of Science and Technology on Sunday, February 1.
Prior to his appointment as Chairman, Dr. Moinul Islam was appointed as a Member (Physical Sciences) of the Commission through a separate office order. Before assuming the role of Chairman, he served as Director of the Planning and Development Division at the Commission’s headquarters.
Dr. M Moinul Islam was born into a respected Muslim family in South Halishahar of Chattogram district. He joined the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission on April 16, 1995, as a Scientific Officer in the Health Physics and Radioactive Waste Management Division of the Institute of Nuclear Science and Technology (INST) at the Atomic Energy Research Establishment (AERE) in Savar.
He obtained his BSc (Honours) and MSc degrees in Physics with first class from the University of Chattogram. Later, he earned a PhD degree through research in Physics and Technology of Nuclear Reactors from the University of Birmingham, UK, and another PhD in Physics and Radioactive Waste Management from the University of Warwick, UK.
Throughout his career, Dr. Moinul Islam has held several key positions within the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission. These include Head of the Health Physics and Radioactive Waste Management Division at AERE and INST, Director of INST, Director of the Physical Sciences Division at BAEC headquarters in Dhaka, and Director of the International Relations Division. He also served as the National Liaison Officer (NLO) of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
While serving in various capacities, he played an important role in development activities of the Commission, including serving as Project Director of the “Establishment of Nuclear Power Plant Project, Chattogram.”
In addition, under the Forum for Nuclear Cooperation in Asia (FNCA), he has been involved with the Radiation Safety and Radioactive Waste Management project. He has also served as Project Counterpart for several technical cooperation projects of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), including TC, INT, and RAS projects, and continues to serve as a member of the IAEA’s Waste Safety Standards Committee (WASSC).
Dr. Moinul Islam has published a number of significant research papers in national and international journals, particularly in the fields of radiation safety, environmental radioactivity monitoring, and radioactive waste management.
