A workshop titled “Professional Development: Teaching and Learning” was held at Jashore University of Science and Technology (JUST) with the aim of enhancing the quality and professional standards of both teaching and learning processes among faculty members.

The workshop took place on Tuesday, January 27, at 10:00 am at the Professor Mohammad Sharif Hossain Gallery of the National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam Academic Building. The programme was organised by the Institutional Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of the university. JUST Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Md Abdul Majid attended the event as the chief guest, while Treasurer Professor Dr Hossain Al Mamun was present as a special guest.

Addressing the participants, special guest Professor Dr Hossain Al Mamun delivered a guideline-oriented speech for the attending teachers. He said that learning is a lifelong process that begins at birth and continues until the final moments of life. People acquire knowledge at every stage—from family and society to all levels of life—but it is at the university level that individuals receive the education necessary to stand successfully in their professional lives.

He noted that university teachers play a crucial role as role models for students, significantly influencing them. Students constantly observe and emulate their teachers in various ways—their actions, words, behaviour, conduct, teaching methods, research activities, and overall professional approach all leave lasting impressions. Therefore, he emphasised that every teacher must practise and uphold their core professional and ethical qualities.

Professor Al Mamun further stated that in the rapidly changing world of the 21st century, there is no alternative to professional development for improving the quality of education. A teacher, he said, is not merely a provider of information but a lifelong learner. Professional development plays an inseparable role in enhancing the quality of both teaching and learning processes.

He described teaching and learning as two sides of the same coin, stressing that effective teaching is successful only when genuine learning takes place among students. He advocated for a shift from teacher-centred approaches to student-centred learning systems, ensuring open access to knowledge acquisition and dissemination. Through professional development, teachers can learn how to ensure active student participation in the learning process.

The keynote speaker at the workshop was Professor Dr Md Jamal Uddin from the Department of Statistics at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, Sylhet. He presented detailed insights on the theme “Professional Development: Teaching and Learning” through a comprehensive slide presentation for the participating teachers.

The seminar was chaired by Professor Dr A. M. Swaraj, Director of IQAC. Also present were IQAC Additional Director (QA) Dr K. M. Anis-ul-Haq, along with assistant professors and lecturers from various departments of JUST. The programme was conducted by IQAC Additional Director (ETL) Dr Farhana Yasmin.
