Banglalink Brings Voice over Wi-Fi Calling Nationwide
Digital operator Banglalink has officially launched Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi technologyVoWiFi) calling services nationwide, enabling customers across Bangladesh to make high-quality voice calls using Wi-Fi alongside the mobile network.
In a press release issued on Thursday (January 8), Banglalink said the nationwide rollout will allow customers to enjoy HD voice quality and uninterrupted calling using home or office Wi-Fi connections. The service is expected to particularly benefit users in areas with weak network coverage, such as high-rise buildings, densely populated structures, and remote regions.
Banglalink became the first mobile operator in the country to introduce VoWiFi technology on a trial basis in September last year. The pilot phase was conducted in selected areas of Dhaka, Chattogram, and Khulna. Based on real-life usage experiences and customer feedback, the operator evaluated and enhanced the service quality before its nationwide launch.
When mobile signal strength is weak, VoWiFi technology automatically routes calls through available Wi-Fi networks. In all other cases, the service functions like conventional voice calls over the mobile network. Customers do not need to download any additional app or complete separate authentication to use the service. Call switching between Wi-Fi and mobile networks occurs seamlessly without any disruption.
Commenting on the launch, Banglalink’s Chief Corporate and Regulatory Affairs Officer, Taimur Rahman, said VoWiFi technology would bridge connectivity gaps regardless of location or infrastructure, ensuring clear and high-quality calling services. He noted that whether in remote areas or in homes and offices in the capital, customers would be able to enjoy uninterrupted calling. By using Wi-Fi as a voice channel, the service will enhance customers’ digital lifestyles and provide a more convenient calling experience anytime and anywhere.
He also highlighted that the nationwide deployment was made possible through successful collaboration among mobile operators, regulators, ISPs, and technology partners. Such collective innovation, he added, plays a significant role in improving customer experience and making digital technologies more accessible.
Currently, in line with regulatory guidelines, VoWiFi calling is available on selected handset models and through approved ISP partners. Banglalink stated that it is actively working with device manufacturers and ISP partners, following regulatory directives, to expand the service further. The newly launched VoWiFi service will complement Banglalink’s LTE network and strengthen indoor and remote-area connectivity across the country.
