Cybercrime Crackdown: CID Nabs Data Trafficker from Cumilla

The Cyber Police Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has arrested a member of a syndicate involved in the illegal trade of citizens' confidential and personal information through various Facebook pages and groups. The arrested suspect, identified as Md. Tofayel Hossain (29), was apprehended from Cumilla. A case has been filed against him at Paltan Model Police Station (DMP).

Seizure of Electronic Evidence

Confirming the arrest on Friday (March 21), CID's Special Superintendent of Police (Media), Jashim Uddin Khan, stated, "During the arrest, we seized two mobile phones, four SIM cards, and a laptop used in the criminal activities." He further added that efforts are ongoing to apprehend other fugitive members of the syndicate.

Illegal Trade of Sensitive Information

CID’s cyber monitoring team, through regular surveillance, uncovered suspicious transactions involving sensitive state and personal data. The illegally traded data included:

  • National Identity Card (NID) details

  • Birth registration records

  • Call lists and location data from mobile operators

  • Biometric information

  • Mobile financial services (MFS) transaction details

  • Passport information

  • Mobile SIM registration databases

Authorities believe that these classified data sets were being sold for financial gain with malicious intent.

High-Tech Operation Leads to Arrest

Acting on intelligence reports and digital forensic evidence, CID conducted a special operation in Cumilla, successfully arresting Md. Tofayel Hossain. Following his arrest, a case was lodged at Paltan Model Police Station (DMP), while further investigations and manhunts for his accomplices are currently underway.
