Asif Launches New Facebook Page After Official Account Removed

Former adviser and independent candidate for the Dhaka-10 constituency Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan has launched a new Facebook page titled “Asif for Dhaka 10” after his official Facebook page was removed following coordinated reporting and strikes linked to posts about Sharif Osman Hadi, spokesperson of the Inqilab Mancha.

According to Asif Mahmud, all posts and videos related to the issue were hit with strikes and mass reports, ultimately leading to the removal of his verified Facebook page. As a result, he said, the new page will now serve as the primary platform for his election campaign and related updates.

On Friday night, December 26, Asif Mahmud announced the launch of the new page through a post on his verified Facebook account. In the post, he wrote that all future election-related activities and updates would be shared through the new page, titled “Asif for Dhaka 10 (Carrying the spirit of July, committed to building the future of Dhaka-10).”

Cybersecurity expert Tanvir Hasan Joha described the removal of the page not merely as an individual issue but as a broader technical warning for those involved in politics, activism, and journalism. He advised Asif Mahmud to take several security measures to recover the page and prevent future incidents.

Joha recommended changing passwords for all accounts that had admin access to the page, enforcing two-factor authentication on all admin accounts using an authenticator app, and reviewing the Facebook Business Manager’s Security Center to remove suspicious apps and sessions. He also suggested submitting an official recovery request via facebook.com/hacked and using media or legal support channels available to verified pages.

He further noted that the misuse of Facebook’s policy violation reporting system is often more of a strategic attack than a purely technical one.
