BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman has remarked that the health of the ailing national leader Khaleda Zia is now in critical condition due to continuous persecution. He made this comment in a post on his Facebook page on Friday, 6 December.

In his post, Tarique Rahman described 6 December as an unforgettable day. He recalled that on this day in 1990, the blood-soaked streets marked the end of autocracy. He noted that on 24 March 1982, Hussain Muhammad Ershad, violating professional loyalty and his oath, deposed the elected president, Justice Abdus Sattar, at gunpoint, effectively killing democracy and imposing unconstitutional rule. The multi-party democracy, initiated by the great martyr President Ziaur Rahman, had been destroyed by the autocrat Ershad, leaving democratic institutions in ruins.

Rahman wrote that to restore democracy, Khaleda Zia fought relentlessly for nearly nine years with unwavering determination, earning a reputation as a resolute leader. She mobilized a massive public movement, culminating in 6 December 1990, when students and the public together defeated autocracy, restoring democracy. He further highlighted that in the spirit of this democratic victory, on 5 August 2024, the people again overcame a violent fascist force, with the historical fascist Awami League having been a formidable foe to democracy. He urged continued struggle to fully revive democracy and establish democratic values in the state and society.

Rahman also noted that under Sheikh Hasina’s misrule, “Mother of Democracy” Khaleda Zia had been subjected to jail sentences and multiple forms of oppression. He emphasized that her health is now in extreme danger due to relentless harassment and prayed to Allah for her swift recovery. He also condemned the widespread persecution of nationalist leaders and activists across the country.

Concluding his post, Tarique Rahman paid homage to the martyred heroes of the anti-autocracy movement from 1982 to 1990 and extended greetings to the citizens who participated in defending democracy. He called on democratic forces to remain united to prevent any resurgence of anti-democratic powers.
