Two suspects have been arrested for allegedly killing a young man named Takbir Ahmed (22) inside an abandoned Water Development Board building in Siddhirganj, Narayanganj, following a dispute over online gambling. The arrested individuals are Md. Harun (34) and Md. Rafiqul (38).
The Narayanganj Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) confirmed the arrests during a press briefing on Saturday, 29 November. The briefing was attended by Superintendent of Police Md. Mostafa Kamal Rashed, head of the PBI Narayanganj unit.
According to the PBI, a special team led by Investigating Officer Sub-Inspector Md. Riaz Uddin Rony conducted technical analysis and acted on confidential information. On Thursday (27 November), the team first arrested Harun from Langalband in Sonargaon. Based on his information, Rafiqul was arrested the same day from the Wapda Colony intersection in Siddhirganj. Later, Takbir’s mobile phone was recovered from the ceiling of Rafiqul’s house.
During primary interrogation, the suspects confessed that while under the influence of drugs, they attacked Takbir with a brick during an argument over online gambling, killing him on the spot. They then called Takbir’s father using an old SIM card and demanded Tk 40,000 in ransom.
The PBI further stated that Takbir had left home on Tuesday (25 November) evening and did not return. While searching for him the following day, his family discovered his body on the ground floor of a deserted four-storey building in the ATI Wapda Colony area of Siddhirganj. Later that day, the PBI took over the investigation based on a case filed by Takbir’s father.
