Dr. Sayem Named CUET Vice Chancellor
- Appointed by Presidential order
- Expert in clean energy research
- Eyes technology-driven CUET
Professor Dr. Abu Sadat Muhammad Sayem of the Department of Mechanical Engineering has been appointed Vice Chancellor of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET). The Ministry of Education announced the appointment through an official notification issued on 27 July, Monday by order of the President.
Dr. Sayem is currently serving as the Head of the Department of Petroleum and Mining Engineering at CUET. He is also the President of the CUET Teachers' Association and has served on numerous academic, administrative and policy-making committees. He is a fellow and member of several national and international engineering organizations.
He will succeed Professor Dr. Mahmud Abdul Matin Bhuiyan as the university's Vice Chancellor.
Born on October 26, 1980, in Patiya of Chattogram, Dr. Sayem graduated in Mechanical Engineering from CUET and joined the same department as a lecturer in 2005. Over the past 22 years, he has established himself as a respected academic and researcher.
His research focuses on STEM education, innovation, clean and sustainable energy, decarbonization, green hydrogen production and storage, renewable energy, energy conversion systems, waste-to-energy technologies, biofuels and climate change. His research papers have been published in leading national and international journals, earning recognition in the global research community. Many of his students have pursued higher studies and professional careers abroad under his mentorship.
Dr. Sayem completed his master's degree at Hokkaido University, Japan, and earned his PhD from CQUniversity Australia. Although he received an opportunity to work as a Mechanical Design Engineer at a leading Australian mining company after completing his doctorate, he chose to return to Bangladesh to dedicate himself to teaching and research.
Reflecting on his decision, Dr. Sayem said, "I could have achieved much more personally by staying abroad. But if those achievements did not benefit my students or the university that shaped me as an engineer, they would have little meaning. I want to stand beside my students and strengthen CUET's global reputation. As Vice Chancellor, I hope to take the university to new heights through research, innovation and technological excellence with the support of the entire CUET family."
Education and technology experts believe his appointment could strengthen CUET's research ecosystem, expand international collaboration, and accelerate innovation in clean energy and sustainable engineering.
