Online Gambling Grief: Youth Ends Life Under Khulna-Bound Train

A young man who had lost everything to online gambling has died by suicide by jumping under a train. His name was Zahid Abdullah Sifat (21), son of the late Zakir Hossain of Barohaibatpur village in Jashore Sadar upazila.

The incident occurred early Saturday morning, 22 November, on the railway line in the Uttarpara area of Churamankati Union under Jashore.

Locals said they found Sifat’s body lying beside the railway tracks at dawn and informed the police. The Government Railway Police (GRP) and Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) later identified him.

SI Mizanur Rahman, in charge of the Jashore Railway Police Outpost (Khulna Railway Station), said Sifat had become addicted to online gambling and had lost everything. He had fallen into debt and was suffering from depression.

On Friday, 21 November, around 7 p.m., Sifat left home. According to initial investigation, he later jumped under the Dhaka-to-Khulna Nakshikantha Mail Train and died by suicide.

He added that PBI confirmed his identity using fingerprints at the scene, after which Sifat’s elder brother, Shakib Hossain, formally identified the body. As the family did not lodge any complaint, the body was handed over to his mother and brother without an autopsy.
