Meta’s Massive AI Move Meets Market Meltdown
Despite its massive investments in artificial intelligence (AI) technology, Meta is facing turbulence in the market amid a shortage of viable products. The company is currently constructing two major data centers in the United States and has announced plans to spend nearly $600 billion on infrastructure over the next three years. However, this colossal expenditure has alarmed investors, according to a report by TechCrunch.
The latest quarterly report shows Meta’s operating expenses have risen by $7 billion year-on-year, while capital expenditures have surged to nearly $20 billion. Most of this spending has gone toward AI talent acquisition and infrastructure development — yet it has yielded little visible revenue so far.
Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg told analysts, “We want to increase computing power so that we can build new AI models and capitalize on future opportunities.” However, his remarks failed to reassure the market. As a result, Meta’s stock price dropped by 12 percent in just two days, wiping out $200 billion in market value.
Analysts note that while companies like Google and Nvidia are seeing clear revenue streams from their AI ventures, Meta still lacks a commercially viable product. Although it has introduced Meta AI and the Vibes video generator, neither has yet proven to be a sustainable business model.
Zuckerberg stated that Meta’s Superintelligence Lab is developing a new generation of AI models, the results of which “will be seen in the coming months.” Yet market experts warn that time is running out — Meta must soon demonstrate that its AI investments can indeed turn into profit.
