Robi Rolls Out ‘Smart Cane’ for the Visually Impaired
As part of World White Cane Day celebrations, Robi Axiata PLC has begun distributing smart canes to visually impaired individuals, aiming to enhance their safety, mobility, and self-reliance. The initiative reflects the telecom operator’s continued commitment to empowering disadvantaged communities through technology.
The smart cane distribution event was held on Thursday, 17 October, at Robi’s corporate headquarters in Dhaka. Present at the event were Shahed Alam, Chief Corporate and Regulatory Officer of Robi Axiata PLC; Sharif Shah Jamal Raj, Director of Public Affairs and Sustainability; and Ridwan Hossain, Chief Executive Officer of Drishti Technologies Limited, along with other senior officials.
Developed by Drishti Technologies, the Avash Smart Cane features sound-based obstacle detection, haptic feedback, and audible alerts—enabling users to move independently and confidently. Bangladesh is home to around four million visually impaired people, many of whom face challenges in mobility, education, and employment. Robi’s initiative seeks to reduce these barriers by providing accessible assistive technology.
Speaking at the event, Shahed Alam, Robi’s Chief Corporate and Regulatory Officer, said, “We believe that innovation should always serve humanity. The Smart Cane initiative is a true reflection of that belief—demonstrating how technology can foster an inclusive digital society. This device will strengthen the independence and safety of visually impaired individuals, empowering them to lead more confident lives.”
The distribution program is being implemented in collaboration with seven partner organizations: Ispahani Islamia Eye Institute and Hospital, Visually Impaired People’s Society (VIPS), RealView, Blind Education and Rehabilitation Development Organization (BERDO), Doors of Inclusive Society (DIS), Nahr Initiatives, and Sporsho Foundation.
