Diploma Engineers Demand Justice with Long March to NESCO in Rangpur
Diploma engineer students in Rangpur staged a “Long March to NESCO” program, pressing a seven-point demand including the withdrawal of what they described as false cases. From the protest, they issued a seven-day ultimatum to local police to arrest Assistant Sub-Engineer RokonuZZaman.
During the sit-in at the Old Truck Stand area, students alleged that RokonuZZaman, an Assistant Sub-Engineer at the Rangpur NESCO office, fabricated a false situation and shifted the blame onto diploma students. They strongly condemned the incident, demanding the immediate arrest of those causing disorder in the power sector, the withdrawal of conspiratorial cases, and the implementation of their seven-point demands.
Speakers at the sit-in included central coordinators of the Diploma Engineers Welfare Foundation, Saiful Islam and Mostafizar Rahman, along with other leaders.
Saiful Islam stated, “Today in Rangpur, after an hour-long sit-in as part of the Long March to NESCO program, a memorandum has been submitted to the Chief Engineer of Rangpur. We have set a seven-day ultimatum for our demands to be met. If Assistant Sub-Engineer Rokonuzzaman is not arrested and their hired goons are not given exemplary punishment, our next program will be a long march towards the NESCO headquarters in Rajshahi.”
He further added, “We are also demanding that BUET students withdraw from their illogical three-point movement.”
Earlier, on Tuesday afternoon, September 2, students from Rangpur Polytechnic Institute brought out a protest rally that paraded through the city before heading towards the regional NESCO office at Khamar Mor.
Faced with police resistance at the Old Truck Stand area, the students held their sit-in there. Around 10 polytechnic institutes from Rangpur and Rajshahi divisions joined the protest.
The demonstration, organized under the banner of the Diploma Engineers Welfare Foundation, saw students from various educational institutions carrying banners and festoons while chanting slogans.
