Grameenphone Launches 5G In All Divisional HQ
Two leading telecom operators launched their commercial 5G services in Bangladesh on the same day. On Monday, September 1, Robi hosted a soft launch ceremony of 5G at its corporate office in Gulshan, Dhaka. Just a short while later, around 3:30 PM, Grameenphone’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Yasir Azman announced the operator’s commercial 5G rollout across all divisional cities through its official Facebook page.
In a 38-second reel, introducing himself and greeting customers, Azman said, “Grameenphone always comes to you with the power of innovation. Today I am very delighted and happy. We are launching 5G in all divisions of Bangladesh. Let the doors of infinite possibilities for Bangladesh open through this.”
In a press release issued by the company, he further described the launch as “a new chapter in Bangladesh’s historic journey toward becoming a smart nation,” adding: “We are proud to launch 5G services across all divisional cities, which will bring transformative technology to the hands of the people. Through 5G technology, we are initiating a faster and more reliable network—one that will open doors of opportunity through innovation, entrepreneurship, and smart services, while shaping the country’s future. Our mission is to connect people to what matters most, ensuring progress and productivity, and unlocking immense possibilities nationwide. This milestone will accelerate that mission. We are delighted to be at the forefront of building the future. Congratulations to our customers for being part of this promising journey, because everything we do is for them. At the same time, we extend heartfelt thanks to the Government of Bangladesh and BTRC, whose support has made it possible to bring this modern technology to the people of Bangladesh.”
It may be recalled that on December 12, 2021, Teletalk had initially launched 5G on a trial basis in Bangladesh, although it has yet to be fully rolled out. According to the guidelines published in February 2024, licensed operators were required to launch the service within one year of the policy announcement, with the mandate to ensure 5G technology in airports, seaports, industrial zones, and commercial areas by October 30, 2025. In line with these directives, private operators have now begun their commercial introduction of 5G services in phases.
