Safe Streets Stand: The Safe Roads Movement Demands Ban on Battery Rickshaws

The Safe Roads Movement has issued a three-point demand, including a complete halt to the import, production, and sale of battery-powered auto-rickshaws. The organization warned of stern protests if the demands are not met within seven days.

The ultimatum was announced at a press conference held in front of the National Museum in Shahbagh on Sunday, May 4.

Abdullah Mehedi Deepto, President of the Safe Roads Movement, stated, "At present, most road accidents are caused by auto-rickshaws. These vehicles are not only responsible for accidents but also a major contributor to traffic congestion."

The organization claimed that the number of auto-rickshaws has tripled since August 5, alleging that, "Hasina’s allies do not want these vehicles to be banned." They emphasized that banning auto-rickshaws is the responsibility of the interim government.

The Safe Roads Movement also called for the rehabilitation of auto-rickshaw drivers. The press conference was attended by several other leaders, including NisA General Secretary Tanzid Mohammad Sohrab Reza.
