China’s Foldable Smartphone Market Sees Significant Surge in 2024

China’s foldable smartphone market has witnessed remarkable growth in 2024, marking a 27% increase compared to 2023, according to a recent analysis by market research firm Counterpoint. Although foldable phones account for only 3% of total smartphone sales in China, the rapid pace of growth is considered highly significant, reports GSM Arena.

China remains the most competitive market for foldable smartphones globally, with several manufacturers selling their foldable models exclusively within the country. Amid this fierce competition, Huawei has maintained its dominance, capturing more than half of China’s total foldable phone sales. In the book-style foldable category, Huawei’s Mate X5 and Mate X6 emerged as the top-selling models, while in the clamshell segment, the Pocket 2 and Nova Flip gained the most popularity.

Honor is the only other brand to secure a double-digit market share, driven by the strong performance of its Magic Vs2 and Vs3 foldable phones.

The study also revealed that 67% of Chinese foldable phone users prefer the book-type form factor, highlighting a clear consumer inclination towards larger screen devices.

Analysts note that foldable smartphones are no longer limited to tech enthusiasts or predominantly male users. Thanks to advancements in technology, newer foldable phones are lighter, more durable, and equipped with enhanced cameras, making them increasingly popular among general consumers, including women. This evolution has significantly expanded the niche market over the past few years, with the growth trajectory expected to continue.
