Mahdi Amin Addresses Bangladesh Arch Summit
State Backs Global Accreditation For Architects
- Canberra Accord alignment sought to unlock global-scale digital architectural modeling and commissions
- Policy framework to streamline employment and international postgraduate pathways for annual graduates
- State commits dedicated budgetary funding for modern academic design studios and laboratories
Accelerating parametric architectural modeling, sustainable structural engineering, and the international mobility of technical graduates, the government reaffirmed its commitment to supporting architectural innovation. Addressing the inaugural ceremony of the "Bangladesh Arch Summit 2026," hosted by the Institute of Architects Bangladesh (IAB) at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre on 09 October, Friday, Adviser to the Prime Minister and PMO Spokesperson Mahdi Amin outlined future engineering and architectural priorities.
Speaking as the chief guest, Mahdi Amin stated that the state holds architectural disciplines in high regard. He assured that comprehensive infrastructural and policy frameworks will be instituted so that emerging local architects can project Bangladesh's structural engineering prowess onto the global stage. Under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, targeted development strategies aim to fundamentally transform the nation's infrastructural landscape over the next five years, creating opportunities for iconic, sustainable master designs.
Highlighting youth career development, the spokesperson noted that nearly one thousand architects graduate domestically each year. The administration is formulating pathways to secure their employment within local industries while easing admissions into international Master's and PhD programs. To empower professionals to deliver international engineering and design projects remotely from Bangladesh, he urged swift institutional alignment with the Canberra Accord. He called upon the IAB, the University Grants Commission (UGC), and the Bangladesh Accreditation Council (BAC) to coordinate their efforts to secure international equivalency for local degrees.
To upgrade foundational pedagogy, Mahdi Amin announced state readiness to modernise curricula, fund advanced design studios and fabrication laboratories, balance student-teacher ratios, and recruit faculty across public universities.
Presided over by IAB President Prof. Dr. Shereef Shams Emon, the symposium featured remarks from BAC Chairman Prof. Dr. Md. Akhtar Hossain Khan, South African architect Kevin Bingham, North South University Professor M. Mahbubur Rahman, BRAC University Professor Fuad Hassan Mallick, and architects Mahmudul Anwar Riad and Prof. Dr. Saiful Islam.
