Milestone Transition Toward 100 Percent Renewable Energy Grid
Akij Bashir Becomes First Bangladeshi Firm in RE100
- Akij Bashir Group becomes the first Bangladeshi entity to join RE100
- The industrial conglomerate currently operates nearly 90 MW of solar capacity
- The global initiative mandates 100 percent renewable electricity by 2050
Akij Bashir Group has made history as the first Bangladeshi corporate entity to join RE100, a global initiative led by Climate Group in partnership with CDP. RE100 brings together influential businesses committed to 100% renewable electricity, accelerating the transition toward a clean energy economy. By joining this campaign, the group reinforces its technological strategy to fully shift its industrial operations to renewable power sources.
Over 400 major global enterprises are members of RE100, committing to 100% renewable electricity across their operations by 2050. Members report their progress annually, which is evaluated against RE100's technical standards. The initiative also acts as a knowledge-sharing platform where members leverage expert insight, technical policy discussions, and global best practices.
For Akij Bashir Group, RE100 provides an international framework to execute its energy roadmap with transparency, scalability, and precision. It allows the conglomerate to measure its energy metrics against global benchmarks, strengthening trust among stakeholders while promoting sustainable industrial expansion.
The group's manufacturing facilities across particle board, ceramics, and glass currently boast a combined solar power capacity of nearly 90 MW. The 24.39 MWp rooftop solar system at Akij Ceramics in Trishal generates approximately 28,050 MWh of clean electricity annually, offsetting 22,440 tons of CO2 emissions. Ten megawatts of this capacity are integrated into the national grid via net metering.
In Habiganj, Akij Bashir Glass hosts an 18.2 MW rooftop solar array integrated with a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) to maintain grid stability during outages. The facility also utilizes Waste Heat Recovery (WHR) technology via steam turbines, allowing 71% of its total energy requirements to be met from renewable and recovered sources.
Additionally, the rooftop solar array at Janata Jute Mills completely satisfies the plant’s electrical power needs, backed by battery storage. Meanwhile, the 8.1 MWp rooftop setup at Akij Particle Board Mills is projected to produce 9.3 million kWh annually, reducing CO2 emissions by 7,452 tons. The conglomerate is also collaborating with Infrastructure Development Company Limited (IDCOL) on multi-faceted energy efficiency projects.
Commenting on the achievement, Sheikh Bashir Uddin, Managing Director of Akij Bashir Group, stated that joining RE100 is not merely a commitment to renewable energy, but a critical step toward transforming energy usage and ensuring sustainable growth. He noted that as the first Bangladeshi company to join this global initiative, the group aims to drive a greener, more resilient energy transition while encouraging other industries to adopt sustainable energy practices.
Following its core ethos 'Beyond Tomorrow', Akij Bashir Group plans to continue scaling its technological infrastructure to build a sustainable, renewable-driven industrial ecosystem in Bangladesh.
