In a historic milestone for sovereign debt management, Bangladesh today successfully conducted its first-ever government securities buyback operation. Bangladesh Bank executed the transaction on behalf of the Finance Division. Government securities buyback is an advanced financial management procedure that allows the government to repurchase existing sovereign bonds from the market prior to their maturity, serving as a globally recognized Liability Management Operation (LMO).

According to official sources, this initiative will effectively reduce the burden of lump-sum repayments at maturity, streamline refinancing risk management, smooth out debt servicing schedules, and enhance the overall efficiency of the government securities market. Furthermore, it marks a key technical step toward making public debt management more proactive, modern, and market-driven.

The Finance Division has been implementing structured reforms to balance debt costs and risks, ensure sustainable debt management, and upgrade the technical framework of the government securities market. The execution of this maiden buyback auction represents significant progress within this broader reform agenda.

Aligned with the objectives of the Medium-Term Debt Management Strategy (MTDS), this debt management framework provides scope for future operations based on prevailing market dynamics, government cash flow positions, and strategic requirements.

Regarding the strategy, Siraj Ud-Doula Khan, PRO, MoF stated that the government will continue to conduct Buyback Auctions as needed in the future, taking into account market conditions, liquidity levels, investor demand, and the structural design of public debt.
