Research does not depend on age, expensive equipment, or big laboratories; rather, it originates from identifying surrounding problems and attempting to solve them using available tools. University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Professor Dr. Mamun Ahmed highlighted this while addressing as the chief guest at the 'Little Researchers Conference 2026' held at the Dhaka University TSC Auditorium on Saturday (October 3).

A total of 318 students from grades 7 to 10 across the country participated in the conference, presenting 128 research papers, concept papers, and posters focused on education, science, environment, computer science, and social sciences.

Professor Mamun Ahmed noted that research need not strictly originate at the university level. Stressing courage, curiosity, and scientific thinking among young minds, he pointed out that despite substantial funding and international journal citations over the past five decades, many real-world problems facing citizens remain unresolved.

Calling for a shift in perspective, he urged focusing research efforts on specific national issues such as traffic congestion, power supply, pure drinking water, and salinity. He assured that if researchers submit project proposals targeting explicit problem-solving, UGC will consider funding them based on practical impact.

Special speeches were delivered by DU Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Professor Dr. Mohammad Almojaddedi Alfehani, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology Professor Dr. Upama Kabir, and Planning Editor of The Financial Express Asjadul Kibria.

Chaired by Advocate Muhammad Shafiqur Rahman, Chairman of 'Chintar Chash'—a voluntary research organization dedicated to cultivating research habits among school students—the event was attended by university faculty, students, young researchers, guardians, and teachers.
