Dhaka University to Debut International Cancer Conference

For the first time, an international conference on cancer will be held at Dhaka University’s Senate Building on September 25. Organized by the university’s Department of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology under the UNESCO Participation Program 2024-25, the conference aims to advance cancer research, treatment, and public awareness in Bangladesh.

The Cancer Care and Research Trust Bangladesh (CCRBT) is collaborating as an associate organizer. Discussions will focus on gaps in cancer management, lack of education and awareness, and disparities in social and medical services, with the goal of identifying sustainable solutions tailored to the Bangladeshi context.

Professor Dr. Sayedur Rahman, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser for the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, will attend as chief guest. Notable oncologists and researchers expected at the event include Emeritus Professor Sir Walter Bodmer of the University of Oxford; Professor M. A. Hai, President of the Oncology Club; Professor Dr. Syed M. Akram Hossain, Chairman of Oncology at Bangladesh Medical University (BMU); Dr. Javed Iqbal, Anatomical Pathologist at Singapore General Hospital; Dr. Renzo Guinto of the Planetary Health Initiative, Duke-NUS Medical School; Dr. Firdausi Qadri, Emeritus Scientist at icddr,b; and Professor Dr. Sharif Akhteruzzaman of Dhaka University’s Department of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology.

According to the organizers, online registration for participation has already begun. Students may register by paying Tk. 350 and professionals Tk. 750 until September 12. Organizers expressed hope that the conference will open a new horizon for research, policymaking, and public awareness in cancer management in Bangladesh.
