Bluesky Boosts Video Limit to 10 Minutes
Social media platform Bluesky has increased the maximum video-upload duration for its users to 10 minutes. Until now, the platform had allowed users to post videos of up to three minutes.
The change is primarily aimed at intensifying competition with other text-focused social-media platforms and expanding opportunities for users to create and share video content.
New Video Duration and Features
Alongside increasing the maximum video duration, Bluesky has also raised the maximum file-size limit. Under the new rules, users can now upload video files of up to 300 megabytes (MB). The company has also confirmed that video-upload speeds have been increased by two to three times compared with the previous system.
Bluesky’s new 10-minute limit is the same as the duration of videos recorded directly through the popular video app TikTok. In addition, longer videos can now be posted on other applications built on the same decentralised ‘AT Protocol’ infrastructure as Bluesky, including Bluescreen, Reelo and Skylight.
The Competitive Landscape
In recent months, almost every major social-media platform has been placing greater emphasis on video services. Meta-owned platform Threads, for example, allows users to upload videos of up to five minutes.
Meanwhile, users of the microblogging platform X, formerly Twitter, can post videos of up to 140 seconds for free. Paid users, however, can upload files of up to 16 gigabytes (GB) and videos lasting between three and four hours.
X has also recently introduced a new video editor to encourage users to upload original content.
Efforts to Expand Its User Base
Through the major expansion of its video service, Bluesky is primarily seeking to increase the number of active users on its platform. According to data from global market research and analytics firm Similarweb, Bluesky’s annual active-user base had declined by more than 25 percent by July this year.
Against this backdrop, technology analysts believe the longer video limit and faster upload system could play an important role in attracting new content creators to the platform.
