Mozilla is adding a built-in ad blocker to the iOS version of its Firefox browser to make browsing faster and more convenient for iPhone and iPad users. The network-level feature can block unwanted advertisements, trackers, pop-ups and excessive banners on websites.

The technology is based on an international filter list called EasyList, which identifies advertisements and prevents them from loading before a webpage is fully loaded.

Mozilla said the feature is currently in an experimental phase and is gradually being rolled out to all iOS users.

Where the Ad Blocker Has Limitations

Although the new ad blocker is designed to be effective, it will not block every type of advertisement.

Mozilla has clarified that ads displayed within search-engine results are excluded from the filter. As a result, advertisements that appear after searches on Google, Bing or DuckDuckGo will continue to be displayed.

Sponsored content shown on Firefox's own homepage or new-tab page will also remain visible.

In addition, some advertisements may still appear because of the technical structures used by particular websites, which can make them difficult for the blocker to detect and prevent.

How to Enable the Feature

The ad blocker is currently disabled by default. Users therefore need to activate it manually if they want to use the feature.

On an iOS device, users can open the Firefox app, go to the main menu and select Settings. Under the Browsing section, they can choose Ad Blocker and turn the feature on.

Users can also quickly enable or disable the blocking feature while visiting a website through the Site Menu.
