Internet service providers seek government action following attack, extortion allegations and robbery at a Chattogram ISP office
ISPAB Calls for Stronger Security After Attack on DDN Office
The Chattogram chapter of the Internet Service Providers Association of Bangladesh (ISPAB) has condemned the attack on Digital Dot Net (DDN) and urged the government to strengthen security for internet service providers nationwide. The association also called for the swift arrest and prosecution of those responsible.
The Chattogram chapter of the Internet Service Providers Association of Bangladesh (ISPAB) has called for stronger security measures for internet service providers following an attack, vandalism, robbery and alleged extortion targeting the office of Digital Dot Net (DDN) in Chattogram.
In a statement sent to the press on 13 July,Monday night, ISPAB Chattogram Convener Rajib Shahriar Rubens described the incident as a matter of serious concern, saying it reflects broader security challenges facing the country's internet service provider industry rather than an isolated incident.
According to the association, recent months have seen an increase in allegations of extortion demands, threatening phone calls, intimidation, attacks and harassment targeting ISP operators across the country.
ISPAB said uninterrupted internet services have become a critical component of Bangladesh's economy, education, healthcare, industry, banking, e-commerce and public administration. It warned that continued security threats to ISPs could disrupt the country's digital infrastructure and economic activities.
The association placed four key demands before the government: the swift identification and prosecution of those responsible for the DDN attack, enhanced protection for ISP companies, employees and critical network infrastructure, strict legal action against extortion and attacks targeting the sector, and coordinated preventive measures involving law enforcement agencies, the administration and relevant authorities.
The statement also warned that if security conditions do not improve, maintaining uninterrupted internet services across the country could become increasingly difficult, potentially forcing the ISP sector to consider further measures in the public interest.
Earlier on Monday, a group of around 15 to 20 people reportedly attacked the DDN office in the Access Road area of Chattogram. The company alleged that about Tk 3.5 million was looted during the incident. It also claimed that extortion demands and threats had been made to the company's owner before the attack. Allegations regarding those responsible are under investigation by law enforcement authorities.
