The Government of Bangladesh has identified mobile phone manufacturing and the technology industry as a national priority sector, aiming to expand domestic production, create employment opportunities and strengthen the country's technological capabilities. It also seeks to establish Bangladesh as a regional hub for smart device manufacturing and technology investment.

On Monday, 13 July, Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Minister Fakir Mahbub Anam made the remarks during a courtesy meeting with South Korean Ambassador Kim Ji-joon at his office in the Secretariat.

Posts and Telecommunications Division Secretary Bilquis Jahan Rimi, First Secretary of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea Lee Namsoo and Samsung Electronics Country Manager Jungmin Jung were also present.

The minister said the government remains firmly committed to ensuring a reliable and business-friendly environment for foreign investors. Efforts are underway to make Bangladesh even more attractive for investment through a more competitive tax structure, policy incentives and other investment facilitation measures.

He added that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has prioritised expanding access to affordable smartphones and digital services for people across the country. Alongside expanding digital connectivity, the government is also working to ensure smart devices remain affordable for the general public.

Ambassador Kim Ji-joon praised Bangladesh's investment potential and proposed introducing longer-term and simplified visa arrangements for foreign investors. He said such measures would further strengthen the country's investment climate and encourage greater foreign investment.

Responding to the proposal, the minister said the government is working to simplify and streamline visa procedures for foreign investors and business executives through necessary policy reforms, making investment and business operations in Bangladesh easier.

At the end of the meeting, both sides expressed optimism about expanding cooperation in areas of mutual interest and implementing more joint initiatives.
