A new bill has been introduced in the National Parliament to prevent gambling, online gambling, online betting, and similar criminal activities. The bill proposes strict penalties for these offenses.

On Tuesday, June 23, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed introduced the bill, titled 'Gambling Prevention Bill 2026', during the parliamentary session. Presiding Member of the Panel of Chairmen, Zainul Abedin, chaired the session.

The primary objective of this bill is to enact strict legal provisions and penalties for offline gambling, as well as digital platform-based crimes like online gambling and online betting, which are increasingly affecting the youth.

After introducing the bill, the Home Minister requested to send it to the 'Standing Committee on Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs' for scrutiny, with a direction to submit a report within 5 working days. The proposal was unanimously passed by a voice vote and forwarded to the committee. Following the scrutiny, the bill will be returned to the parliament as a formal report.
