IBM, OpenAI Forge Cybersecurity Alliance
Technology giant IBM has announced a major strategic partnership with OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, to combat the growing wave of cyber threats and increasingly sophisticated digital fraud worldwide. Under the agreement, cutting-edge frontier AI technologies will be deployed to strengthen the cybersecurity infrastructure of large enterprises. Following the announcement on Monday, June 22, IBM’s share price rose by 3.6 percent in the stock market.
IBM has officially joined OpenAI’s specialized “Daybreak Cyber Partner Program.” Through this initiative, IBM consultants and engineers will gain direct access to OpenAI’s most advanced AI models, code resources, and security tools. These capabilities will be integrated into enterprise operations, enabling organizations to identify and mitigate cyber risks far more quickly and effectively than conventional systems.
As the first major step under the partnership, IBM has launched a new Application Security Service. Powered by OpenAI’s cybersecurity algorithms, the service is designed to rapidly and accurately detect, verify, and address vulnerabilities and loopholes in software systems used by organizations.
The new security offering is built on IBM’s internal initiative, Project Lightwell. Last month, IBM and its subsidiary Red Hat jointly launched the project with a US$5 billion investment fund. The primary objective of Project Lightwell is to thoroughly review and improve the security of open-source software code used worldwide. Under the new collaboration, OpenAI’s frontier models will be employed alongside other AI systems to support code reviews and automated vulnerability remediation.
Commenting on the agreement, Mark Hughes, Global Managing Partner for Cybersecurity Services at IBM Consulting, said, “OpenAI’s Daybreak Cyber Partner Program has given us access to a broader range of advanced AI capabilities. We are successfully deploying these technologies across our clients’ systems, enabling them to identify even the most complex cyber risks in moments and respond to them with confidence.”
According to technology analysts, as generative AI enables hackers to launch increasingly sophisticated and powerful cyberattacks, the alliance between an established security provider like IBM and a pioneering AI company such as OpenAI represents a significant milestone in strengthening cybersecurity across the corporate world.
