Governor urges use of Bangla QR for government fees and charges
Initiative aims to reduce cash dependency, ensure financial transparency and expand digital payment access nationwide.
Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr. Md. Mostakur Rahman has urged government institutions to use Bangla QR for collecting various service fees and charges. He said the initiative has been taken to reduce the use of cash, ensure transparency in financial transactions and provide digital payment facilities to people at the grassroots level through a single platform.
Bangladesh Bank disclosed the information on Tuesday (June 23). The central bank said a steering committee has been formed, with the governor as its convener, to implement nationwide transactions through Bangla QR. The first meeting of the committee was chaired by Governor Dr. Md. Mostakur Rahman.
At the meeting, the governor said introducing Bangla QR would reduce the cost of printing, storing and transporting cash. At the same time, customers would be able to easily pay various bills, government fees and service charges. This would increase transparency in financial transactions and ensure access to digital financial services for people in remote areas.
He urged various ministries, divisions and government offices to take initiatives to collect fees and charges through Bangla QR.
The governor also said Bangladesh Bank is working to launch Bangla QR on a limited scale from the beginning of the next fiscal year. Its use will gradually be expanded nationwide.
The meeting was attended by Bangladesh Bank Deputy Governor Nurun Nahar, Executive Director (IT) Muhammad Zakir Hossain, Executive Director and Spokesperson Arif Hossain Khan, Executive Director Sarwar Hossain, representatives from different ministries, commercial banks and mobile financial service (MFS) providers.
