NBR Allows Up to 90-Day Extension for Income Tax Return Filing

The deadline for individual taxpayers to submit their income tax returns is 31 March. However, taxpayers may receive up to an additional three months if they apply before the stipulated deadline, according to the National Board of Revenue (NBR).

Confirming the matter on Monday, 16 March, NBR Public Relations Officer Sheikh Md. Al-Amin said that if taxpayers submit a written request before the deadline expires, the relevant Tax Commissioner may approve an extension of up to a maximum of 90 days for filing the return.

To apply, taxpayers must log in to the NBR’s e-return system online and request an extension using the “Time Extension” menu, he added.

It has been learned that after an application is submitted, the Tax Commissioner of the respective tax region will either approve or reject the request online.

According to the NBR, if the extension request is approved, taxpayers will be able to submit their returns online within the extended period without any penalty or additional tax.

Data from the National Board of Revenue show that nearly 5 million individual taxpayers have already registered in the e-return system for the 2025–26 tax year.

Among them, about 4.1 million taxpayers have already filed their returns. This means that approximately 900,000 taxpayers still have the opportunity to submit their returns.

Considering this situation, the NBR has allowed taxpayers the option to extend the income tax return submission deadline under certain conditions.
