Postal Ballot Registration Nears 900,000 Ahead of 13th National Election
Online voter registration for IT-supported postal balloting in the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Election and referendum is nearing 900,000, according to Election Commission data.
Of the total registrants so far, 579,723 are expatriate Bangladeshis, while 317,740 voters registered from within the country, including 761 inmates currently in legal custody.
At present, nearly 80,000 individuals remain in legal custody across 75 prisons nationwide, a figure that fluctuates due to regular movement of detainees.
Although the postal voting facility has been introduced for the first time for expatriate voters, registration is also open to officials engaged in election duties and government employees working outside their home constituencies through the ‘Postal Vote BD’ app.
As of 8:00 pm on Sunday, December 28, a total of 895,752 voters had registered via the app. Of them, 316,474 registrations originated from within Bangladesh.
According to data available on the Election Commission website, 896,054 applications have been approved, while 32,317 remain under review.
Among the applicants, 803,735 are male voters and 92,317 are female voters. From within Bangladesh, 56,405 women and 260,069 men have completed registration.
Among expatriate voters, Saudi Arabia tops the list, with 170,710 registrations, the highest from any single country.
Under the ‘in-country postal vote’ category, 317,327 applications have been submitted, of which 9,599 are still pending approval. This group includes 276,716 government employees, 35,934 election-duty officials, 3,916 members of Ansar and VDP, and 761 inmates.
District-wise, Dhaka leads with 15,261 registrants, followed by Tangail with 13,018 and Chattogram with 11,740.
In constituency-wise registration, Feni-3 ranks highest with 12,730 registered voters, followed by Chattogram-15 (10,235), Noakhali-1 (10,062) and Cumilla-10 (9,990).
District-level data shows Cumilla at the top, with 764,208 registered voters overall.
The Election Commission stated that registration through the ‘Postal Vote BD’ app will remain open until December 31, following an extension granted last Wednesday. Launched on November 18, the app enables expatriate Bangladeshis in 148 countries to register, provided they use a mobile number from their country of residence.
