BYD Launches Sealion 6 PHEV in Japan After Strong Sales Success in Bangladesh

In February this year, BYD Bangladesh introduced the FWD version of the Sealion 6 to the local market. The company reports that the model has already sold more than 200 units, placing it at the top of the country’s PHEV segment in terms of consumer preference. Riding on this commercial success in Bangladesh—after its launch in Australia—BYD has now unveiled this next-generation super plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) in Japan.

Manufacturers claim that the new launch will put Japan’s own automobile brands (JDM) into direct competition.

In Japan, BYD’s Sealion 6 SUV is available in two configuration grades: a Front-Wheel Drive (FWD) variant designed for extended driving range, and an All-Wheel Drive (AWD) variant that delivers sporty SUV performance with 0–100 km/h acceleration in just 5.8 seconds. The model features BYD’s Super Hybrid DM-i technology, developed over more than 17 years. It integrates a 1.5-litre high-efficiency engine, a DM-i dedicated Blade Battery, and a high-performance Electric Hybrid System (EHS).

The technology keeps the motor active for most driving situations, ensuring a smoother ride while maximizing fuel efficiency. To enhance the interior luxury, the vehicle includes a 15.6-inch high-resolution display with a next-generation infotainment system supporting Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, dual wireless charging, and advanced voice control. Its charging capability is also robust for a PHEV, supporting up to 6 kW AC and 18 kW DC fast charging. The Sealion 6 additionally features Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) and Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) functions, enabling external power supply during emergencies or outdoor activities.

The FWD variant can travel up to 100 km in EV mode on a full charge. For longer journeys, the optimized coordination between engine power generation and motor drive reduces range anxiety and delivers a true modern electric powertrain experience.
