James Cameron, the director of the ‘Avatar’ series, has long been at the forefront of technology-driven filmmaking. His use of performance capture technology to bring the blue-skinned Na’vi people to life has earned global acclaim. However, despite his technological prowess, Cameron holds a critical view of generative AI.

In an interview with CBS Sunday Morning ahead of the release of Avatar: The Way of Water – Fire and Ash, Cameron clarified that many people mistakenly call performance capture AI, but in reality, the two technologies are fundamentally different. According to him, they are “completely opposite.”

He explained that over the years, some have assumed that computers replace actors. In contrast, performance capture preserves the spontaneous, creative moments of the actor-director collaboration—it does not replace them. As part of the interview, footage showed Avatar actors performing underwater scenes in a tank holding 250,000 gallons of water.

Cameron sees generative AI from a perspective of concern. He stated that AI “can create a character, an actor, or even an entire performance just from text prompts,” which, in his opinion, undermines the fundamental human creativity of cinema. “No, it’s terrifying… it’s the exact opposite of what we’re doing,” Cameron emphasized.
