From Sewing Machines to Smart Manufacturing: BGMEA President Outlines Apparel Industry’s Ambitions

Bangladesh has moved far beyond the early stage of sewing machine-based training and is now advancing toward a technology-driven ready-made garment (RMG) sector, said Mahmud Hasan Khan, President of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA).

“Bangladesh’s apparel industry has progressed a long way. Now we are heading toward automation. Industrial engineering and the use of advanced technology are increasing. This will enhance production efficiency. Without improved efficiency, it will be difficult to survive in the global market,” he said.

He made the remarks on Friday, August 29, while addressing the 64th founding anniversary of Apex Clubs of Bangladesh as a special guest at Hotel InterContinental in Dhaka.

The BGMEA president further stated: “Many say the garment sector is worth 40 billion dollars. We say yes, but our target is 100 billion dollars. That is possible only through value addition. Merely exporting basic garments will not be enough; we must achieve the target by enhancing value addition and productivity. Otherwise, the industry will not be sustainable.”

Mahmud Hasan also noted that the apparel sector has already been brought under a central database. “If those who provide services in labor issues also come under this database, the exchange and coordination of information will become much easier,” he added.

The event was attended by Professor Dr. Meshkat Uddin, Vice-Chancellor of Royal University of Dhaka and noted academic, as the chief guest, while Shafiqul Alam, Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser of the interim government, was present as special guest.

The Apex Clubs of Bangladesh, a social and service-oriented organization, has been operating for 64 years. Similar to its presence in other countries, the organization in Bangladesh continues to work on leadership development, raising social awareness, and conducting voluntary activities.
