Police Pretenders: Trio Trapped in Dhaka

Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch (DB–South) has arrested three individuals for allegedly committing online fraud while impersonating police officers. The suspects—Md. Imon Ali (23), Md. Nahidul Islam (27), and Md. Tanzir alias Tanju (28)—were apprehended during a special operation in Ashrafpur, Bagha Upazila, Rajshahi.

The information was disclosed on Thursday, August 28, at a press conference held at Keraniganj Model Police Station by Additional Superintendent of Police, Keraniganj Circle, Md. Jahangir Alam. Present at the briefing were Officer-in-Charge Monirul Islam Dablu of Keraniganj Model Police Station and Officer-in-Charge Md. Saidul Islam of DB–South, Dhaka, along with other police personnel.

A case has been filed at Keraniganj Model Police Station (No.–43, dated 28/08/2025). The charges include Sections 170/385 of the Penal Code and Sections 22/27 of the Cyber Security Ordinance 2025. Police confirmed that the suspects are currently being processed for submission to court.

According to Dhaka District Police, on August 5, Superintendent of Police Md. Anisuzzaman (PPM) learned during an official visit to the Bandodakpara area of Keraniganj Model Police Station that unidentified individuals were using WhatsApp profiles with images of themselves in police uniform to demand money from the public. Acting on his directive, a vigilant team led by Officer-in-Charge Md. Saidul Islam of DB–South tracked the suspects using information technology tools.

Subsequently, with the assistance of Rajshahi District Detective Police, a raid was conducted in Ashrafpur on August 27 at 6:30 am, leading to the arrest of the three suspects. Police recovered 12 mobile phones and 5 visiting cards used in the fraudulent activities. The visiting cards bore the inscription: “Anis, Superintendent of Police, Dhaka District.”
