xAI Introduces Image Generation to Its API

Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company, xAI, has integrated image generation capabilities into its API, expanding its range of AI-powered services.

Initially, the API has been equipped with a model named “Grok-2-Image-1212,” which can generate up to 10 images per request based on a given caption or description. The system allows a maximum of five requests per second, with images delivered in JPG format at a cost of seven cents per image.

Comparatively, Black Forest Labs, which previously partnered with xAI to introduce image generation on Musk’s social media platform, X, charges approximately five cents per image. Another popular AI platform, Ideogram, sets its maximum pricing at eight cents per image.

According to xAI’s documentation, the API does not yet allow customization of image quality, size, or style. Additionally, all user prompts will be reviewed by a "chat model" before processing.

xAI’s Expansion and Funding Efforts

xAI first launched its API in October 2024 and is currently exploring new funding avenues for the training and development of its flagship models, such as Grok-3. The company is reportedly in discussions with investors regarding a potential $10 billion investment, which could push its valuation up to $75 billion.

Beyond API enhancements, xAI has hinted at broader expansion plans. The company recently acquired a generative AI video startup and has begun expanding a data center in Memphis, where it trains and operates various AI models.
