Accelerating the structural shift from paper currency toward an interoperable and inclusive digital payments ecosystem, Bangladesh Bank has intensified nationwide advocacy for the standardized ‘Bangla QR’ infrastructure. Designed to democratize contactless merchant acquiring, the national central bank spearheaded on-ground merchant engagement drives to boost grassroots retail adoption.

According to official sources, Bangladesh Bank Governor Md. Mostakur Rahman conducted real-time purchases using Bangla QR on Monday morning, October 5, in the capital’s commercial hub of Motijheel. During the field initiative, the governor engaged directly with neighborhood merchants, evaluating retail checkout flows and encouraging micro-vendors to transition toward cashless settlements.

Speaking during the promotional drive, Governor Mostakur Rahman emphasized that scaling digital transactions requires pairing advanced technical infrastructure with continuous merchant education and user trust. He affirmed that outreach programs will be aggressively scaled across field levels to curtail cash dependence and accelerate transaction velocity. He noted that if current digital adoption curves persist, cashless payments will expand comprehensively across all nationwide consumer markets within the next year.

Central bank metrics indicate that the unified Bangla QR gateway is actively operational across approximately four million enterprises nationwide. Transaction volumes processed through the channel surged three-and-a-half times over the preceding quarter, currently logging an average daily turnover of approximately BDT 143 crore, reflecting expanding consumer confidence in interoperable QR payments.
