BUET Holds Memorial Discussion on Mass Uprising 2024; Info Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan Attends as Chief Guest
The BUET Teachers' Association organized a memorial and discussion meeting today, Tuesday, at the university's Council Building to commemorate the Mass Uprising 2024. Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan attended as the chief guest, emphasizing the need for institutional balance, accountability, and academic research to prevent recurrent political bloodshed in the nation.
Tuesday, August 4: The Teachers' Association of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) hosted a memorial gathering and discussion session today (Tuesday) at 5:00 PM at the university Council Building to mark the Mass Uprising 2024. Presided over by the BUET Teachers' Association President Professor Dr. Mohammad Anisuzzaman Talukder, the event featured Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan as the chief guest.
The proceedings commenced with a special prayer (doa) seeking eternal peace for the martyrs of the July '24 Mass Uprising, alongside wishes for the speedy recovery of the injured and deep sympathies for their families.
In his address as chief guest, Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan stated, "It is our tragedy as a nation that we have had to move forward through continuous struggle and bloodshed both before and after independence. This proves our failure to establish a stable and just state architecture. Rather than treating the martyrs' sacrifices merely with self-complacency, our core duty is to deeply analyze why the state faces these cycles and find a permanent resolution."
He further underscored, "The strength of a democratic state hinges on its institutional capacity. Without an effective balance, accountability, and constitutional dignity among the parliament, judiciary, executive, and legislative branches, democracy cannot be sustained." Calling upon intellectuals and researchers, the Information Minister urged the faculty to present the history and essence of the July Mass Uprising to the new generation through research, analysis, and logic-driven discourse.
Special guests included BUET Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Mohammad Shariful Islam, former Pro-VC Professor Dr. Abul Hasib Chowdhury, and Dean of the Faculty of Civil Engineering Professor Dr. Md. Abdul Jalil. In his presidential speech, Professor Dr. Mohammad Anisuzzaman Talukder called upon everyone to work collectively toward building a humane, equitable, and prosperous Bangladesh aligned with the spirit of the July uprising. BUET faculty, students, and administration staff attended the event.
