Benazir Ahmed Arrested in Dubai; AI Surveillance Claims Spark Debate
Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed has been arrested in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, in connection with corruption and money laundering cases, according to the government. The information was disclosed by Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed during a statement in the National Parliament.
The reported arrest has also reignited discussions surrounding the artificial intelligence (AI)-based surveillance technologies deployed at Dubai International Airport.
According to sources at the Bangladesh Police Headquarters, Benazir Ahmed recently traveled from London to an Asian country, intending to transit through Dubai before reaching his final destination. Authorities claim that he was identified during airport security and immigration procedures while in transit.
Citing information received from Dubai Police, a senior official at Bangladesh Police Headquarters said that after disembarking during transit, Benazir underwent routine airport security screening like other passengers. The official claimed that the airport’s AI-powered facial recognition system scanned his face and matched it against international criminal databases, identifying an Interpol alert associated with him.
According to the claim, Dubai Police’s Interpol coordination unit subsequently verified the information and detained him shortly afterward. He was later formally arrested.
However, an important point remains that neither Dubai Police, Interpol, nor any relevant Bangladeshi authority has officially confirmed that AI technology played a role in identifying him.
According to official information, the National Central Bureau (NCB) Abu Dhabi, operating under the Ministry of Interior of the United Arab Emirates, informed Bangladesh via email on June 12 that Benazir Ahmed had been arrested by local authorities and was currently in custody in the country.
Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed stated that after assuming office, the current government initiated coordination with the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) regarding Benazir Ahmed’s arrest. As part of that process, the National Central Bureau (NCB) Dhaka submitted a request to Interpol, which subsequently issued a Red Notice against him.
Once regarded as one of Bangladesh’s most influential law enforcement officials, Benazir Ahmed served as Inspector General of Police from April 2020 to September 2022. Prior to that, he held key positions as Director General of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and Commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
Public scrutiny intensified in 2024 following a series of media reports alleging that he and his family had accumulated substantial assets. The allegations prompted an investigation by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). Following court orders, various assets, including land, apartments, company shares, and bank accounts, were seized or frozen at different stages of the investigation.
Attention is now focused on how the extradition process may proceed and what legal steps will be taken to bring him back to Bangladesh.
