Rooppur Reactor Reality: Seminar, Gambhira Promote Nuclear Awareness

A seminar and Gambhira performance were organized in Pakshi, Pabna to raise public awareness about the safety, power generation technology, and environmental protection aspects of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant. The event presented scientific insights into the peaceful use of nuclear energy among students, teachers, and local stakeholders.

The seminar titled “Lecture Series: Nuclear Power — Myths, Realities and Public Interest” was held on Tuesday, May 20 at Pakshi Railway College.

The seminar discussed the electricity generation process of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, reactor physical start-up and power escalation, safety mechanisms, environmental protection measures, and the project’s role in ensuring Bangladesh’s energy security. Scientific explanations were also provided to address common misconceptions surrounding nuclear power.

The event was moderated by Md. Ashik Haidar and chaired by the Principal of Pakshi Railway College.

While speaking as a special expert discussant, Md. Khairul Islam said nuclear power could serve as a safe and long-term energy solution if international safety standards are properly maintained.

Representing the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission, Chief Scientific Officer Asma Begum, Media Focal Point Saikat Ahmed, Public Relations Officer Kazi Mohammad Iqbal Hasani, and Nuclear Information Center Communication Manager Ahsan Habib participated in the discussion.

Participants in the question-and-answer session included A F M Rajibul Alam, S S M Tarikuzzaman, Md. Shafi Kamal, Md. Ashraful Alam, Md. Shafiqul Bari, student Md. Siyam, and others.

Alongside the seminar, a Gambhira cultural performance was also held at the same institution. Performed by the Smart Gambhira team, the event highlighted the importance of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant in electricity generation, environmental protection, and operational safety through simple and accessible language.

Organizers expressed hope that such science-based awareness initiatives would help foster a more positive public understanding of the safe and peaceful use of nuclear energy.
