Japanese automaker Honda has reportedly discontinued several projects under its electric vehicle (EV) program, according to a report by technology analysts. The development has raised concerns that the company could fall further behind in the rapidly intensifying global competition in electric vehicle technology. The news was reported by TechCrunch.

According to the report, Honda has recently suspended the development of the electric Acura RDX as well as the sedan and SUV models of the Honda 0 Series. The company is also reportedly planning to discontinue production of the Honda Prologue model, which was primarily developed based on technology from General Motors in the United States.

Analysts say two major shifts are rapidly shaping the era of electric vehicles: electric powertrain systems and software-driven automotive technologies. Manufacturers such as Tesla, Rivian, and BYD have already taken the lead in the market with regular software updates, advanced infotainment systems, and sophisticated driver-assistance technologies.

Honda has also acknowledged that it is lagging behind in competition in China. The company stated that its competitiveness has declined because it has been unable to offer more valuable products at comparable prices compared with emerging electric vehicle manufacturers.

According to analysts, reducing investment in electric technology could make it even more difficult for Honda to sustain its position in the global market in the future.
