Japan’s Toyota Motor Corporation has retained its position as the world’s leading automobile manufacturer in 2025, continuing its dominance for a sixth consecutive year. According to data released by Reuters, the company sold a record 11.3 million vehicles worldwide last year, marking a 4.6 percent increase compared to the previous year.

The figures include sales of Toyota and Lexus brands, as well as those of its subsidiaries Daihatsu and truck maker Hino Motors. Sales of Toyota and Lexus alone rose by 3.7 percent in 2025, reaching 10.5 million vehicles—an all-time high for the brands.

Strong demand in the United States and Japan served as the primary drivers of Toyota’s growth. Together, these two markets accounted for more than two-fifths of the parent company’s total global sales. In particular, rising demand for hybrid vehicles in the United States played a significant role in boosting overall sales performance.

In contrast, Germany’s Volkswagen Group, which ranked second globally, saw its sales decline in 2025 to around 9 million vehicles, further widening the gap between the two auto giants.
