In response to multiple lawsuits and investigations related to child safety, online gaming platform Roblox has introduced mandatory age verification for chat access for all users worldwide. After initial trials in select markets, the system is now being rolled out globally, TechCrunch reported.

Under the new policy, users must grant camera access in the Roblox app and complete facial age verification in order to use chat features.

Roblox stated that any images or videos used during the verification process will be deleted once verification is complete. The process is being conducted by third-party service provider Persona, which has also confirmed that it will not store users’ data.

Users aged 13 and above may choose to verify their age using a government-issued identity document instead of facial verification. While age verification itself is optional, it is mandatory for accessing chat features.

Once verified, users will be placed into age-based chat groups, restricting communication to users within the same age range. A total of six age groups have been defined. For children under the age of nine, chat will be disabled by default unless parental consent is provided.

According to Roblox, this method is more accurate than relying on self-declared birth years and will play a significant role in enhancing child safety on the platform.
