Uber Launches Driverless Robotaxi Service in Abu Dhabi with WeRide
Uber Technologies, in collaboration with Chinese autonomous-driving technology company WeRide, has launched a driverless robotaxi service in Abu Dhabi. The service was formally introduced on Wednesday based on a partnership announced last year. According to Uber, Abu Dhabi has become the first city outside the United States where fully autonomous taxis are available on its platform, Reuters reported.
Passengers booking an UberX or Uber Comfort ride may be matched with a WeRide robotaxi. The company says the service will expand beyond central Abu Dhabi to surrounding areas by the end of the year.
Guangzhou-based WeRide is currently operating more than 100 robotaxis in the Middle East, Uber added. The initiative is expected to open new horizons in autonomous technology and urban transportation.
