Shrimp Sector Seeks Support for Sustainable, Intensive Cultivation
Shrimp farmers in Satkhira believe that, with increased support from the government and development agencies, Bangladesh can rapidly adopt new technologies and open a new horizon for intensive shrimp cultivation.
They expressed this view on Friday, 21 November, during the results exhibition and closing workshop of the research project on intensive shrimp farming, held at the auditorium of the district’s Shrimp Farming Demonstration Farm and Training Center.
The workshop was chaired by Satkhira District Fisheries Officer G.M. Selim. The Director of the Khulna Division of the Department of Fisheries, Md. Jahangir Alam, attended as chief guest. The event was conducted by Shafiqul Islam, Senior Upazila Fisheries Officer of Satkhira Sadar Upazila.
The discussion session included contributions from Bipul Kumar Basak, Deputy Director of the Department of Fisheries (Khulna Division); Dr. Md. Shariful Azam, Deputy Project Director of the Sustainable Coastal and Marine Fisheries Project; Assistant Project Director A.N.M. Mushfiq Salehin; and Senior Assistant Director Farhana Taslima. Speakers noted that intensive shrimp farming will increase production in coastal regions while ensuring environmentally friendly and sustainable aquaculture.
The project concept paper was presented by Dr. Md. Hasan Faruk, Associate Professor at the University of Dhaka and the project’s principal researcher. He was accompanied by co-principal investigator Professor Dr. Habib Ullah Al Mamun. Their presentation highlighted positive outcomes in water quality, feed management, disease prevention, and productivity under intensive farming methods. Field-level experimental farming demonstrated a significant increase in production compared to earlier methods.
Shrimp farmers from various upazilas participated in the open discussion session. Sharing their experiences, they expressed strong interest in applying new technologies and research findings in practice. Speakers hoped that implementing the project recommendations would help elevate Satkhira’s position in shrimp production.
