Meta Measures: Massive AI Staff Move

As part of restructuring its artificial intelligence research operations, Meta Platforms Incorporated is laying off approximately 600 employees from its Superintelligence Labs unit. On Wednesday, the company stated in a release that the move aims to make the AI unit more agile and efficient, according to Reuters.

The layoffs will affect the Facebook Artificial Intelligence Research (FAIR) unit as well as product-related and infrastructure-based AI teams. However, the new TBD Labs, which focuses on developing Meta’s next-generation foundation models, will remain unaffected.

Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang commented, “Smaller teams will accelerate decision-making and increase the responsibility and impact of each member.” He also advised affected employees to consider applying to other departments within Meta.

The layoffs come just one day after Meta completed a $27 billion funding deal with Blue Owl Capital, marking the largest private capital agreement in the company’s history. Analysts suggest that this deal will support Meta in building larger data centers and advancing its ambitious AI initiatives.
